|What I consider my best work so far.|
|That place you hung out when you were younger is now a reminder of just how close the past really was. Did I even really go anywhere? ...Yes, but I've come back. How long and how hard, yet to be determined. But make the most of what time you have - there has only ever been the present.|
Entry for @ttyto-alba‘s Armored Core character design challenge. I’ve never touched the games but it was an interesting prompt. Realised I’ve never really drawn the same subject multiple times, there’s some things I need to work on like keeping consistent proportions. Was fun finding and following a process for these, big fan of the hair inking which coincidentally came out like a messier version of how Tyto does it. I think it just came naturally from the brush I was using, very similar to an ink pen, and thinking of it as planes instead of a mess of fibres.
For the design I found out about the character and wrote out what I thought were her character traits, then made decisions based on that. Mainly reserved but with a few allowances for expression, such as the bullet hairpins and slightly impractical boots. Mainly uptight / reserved expressions except when morally outraged.
For the expressions I tried to follow the character arc, wherein [spoilers] she escorts you on a mission only to betray you for being rebel scum. Was going for like she hears of you, meets you and warms to you, then finds out you oppose the ruling AI regime through a contract then tries to wipe you out - but fails. Hopefully that all came through, explaining expressions is like explaining jokes, if you don’t get it the first time it’s failed, so hopefully I didn’t fail haha.
I pretty much migrated to Tumblr about 5 years ago and haven't put stuff up here as it's a bit of a process to do everything twice, but it's all up on there if you're interested.
